The average rate for construction equipment in NSW was $11.75 per hour last year, according to the Building Industry Association of Australia.
The report also found the cost of a $12,000-a-month construction contract was the highest in the nation.
It’s a high-cost industry, said Mr McLeod, and workers often pay as much as $10,000 to $15,000 for their work.
”I don’t think it’s fair to ask people to pay a high amount of money to do what we know to be incredibly dangerous work,” he said.
Mr McLeod said workers needed to be aware of the risks associated with building construction, particularly the risk of contracting a deadly disease, respiratory infection and pneumonia.
He said the industry had to take responsibility for the safety of its workers.
